Jesse James Bank Museum

The Jesse James Bank Museum, located on the Historic Liberty Square, was the site of the nation's first successful daylight bank robbery during peacetime. While the villains were never caught, the crime was attributed to Jesse James and his band of outlaws. As visitors to this historic site step into the bank office, they step back in time to 1866. Period furnishings and an account of that fateful February 13th gives visitors a vision of life in Clay County during the post Civil War era. Among the furnishings, a rare Seth Thomas calendar clock hangs on the wall and shows the time and date of this famous robbery. Photographs and letters recounting tales of the 1866 bank robbery and other exploits attributed to the James Gang are on display. The gift shop offers an ample inventory featuring an array of historical books, musical collections and memorabilia as well as period style gifts and souvenirs. The Museum is operated by the Dept. of Clay County Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites.
